It's not "Just" Sciatica

Have you ever heard, “oh it’s just my sciatica” and have no clue what that could possibly mean? When people say they have a sciatica or sciatic pain it means that you have lower back pain that can radiate down one of your legs. Sciatic pain is caused when pressure is put on the sciatic nerve. This happens when a herniated disc is pressing on the nerve or from spinal stenosis which it the narrowing of the spinal canal. It typically effects only one side of the body. This pain can be located in the lower back, butt, hips or in either leg while the intensity can range from mild to sharp pain. Some people even experience numbness or tingling in the affected leg along with muscle weakness.

Know It's Sciatic for Sure

Your chiropractor will evaluate you and your symptoms and decide if there is further diagnostic testing needed. This could be an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan. These tests will help to ensure that you are getting the best care and ensure that chiropractic care is the best treatment for you.

Treatment Plan That's Right for You

After you have been assessed and your chiropractor has gone over your tests (if needed), they will come up with potential treatment options. The options can vary from person to person because each treatment plan is individualized. One option is ice/cold therapy. This helps to reduce inflammation and helps to control the pain. Heat therapy is also an option. This could be done using an ultrasound machine that creates a gentle heat via sound waves that penetrates into tissue. It also helps to increase the blood circulation to that area as well as reduce any muscle pain, stiffness, or spasms. In addition to those mentioned above, your chiropractor will use spinal adjustments. These help to realign vertebrae and free any restricted movement of the spine. These adjustments help to reduce nerve irritability that is responsible for the inflammation, spasms, pain, and other possible symptoms related to sciatic nerve pain.

Find Sciatic Relief at Home

There are some possible ways to prevent sciatica pain or stop it from recurring although that isn’t always possible. Regular exercise, especially focusing on your back and core muscles to help with proper posture and spinal alignment. You could also try stretches that will help to take the pressure off of the sciatic nerve. One stretch involves laying on your back with your legs straight. Bend one of your knees bringing it up to your shoulder and then over your body to the opposite shoulder. Holding it for about 30 seconds.
